The Importance of Good Car
Maintenance in Reducing Car Insurance Costs
The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF)
claimed in August 2009 that drivers could save money on their
car insurance
by keeping their vehicles in good shape.
So what has keeping your car in good condition
got to do with keeping your premiums low?
Why car maintenance is important
The idea is straightforward enough - by dealing
with small problems now, you can prevent them becoming big
problems later. A significant number of car accidents, and
subsequently car insurance claims, are caused by cars suffering
unexpected faults, many of which could be avoided by paying
the proper care and attention to a vehicle.
Being involved in an accident pushes up car
insurance premiums as it wipes out a no-claims discount. There
is also the risk that if the accident was caused by a failure
to maintain the car, an insurer could refuse a payout altogether
on the grounds of negligence.
Indeed many insurers are now starting to pay
direct recognition to drivers who keep their cars well maintained
through reduced premiums. For example, over 50s provider Saga
has said that drivers could save money by taking vital repair
tools with them in preparation for a break down.
In the current economic environment, car maintenance
has taken on added importance as few people can afford the
cost of a new car or repairs if their vehicle is involved
in an accident - remember a car insurance provider will only
pay out for damage to your vehicle if you have comprehensive
cover. Indeed even if you have a fully comprehensive policy
you will still need to cover the cost of the excess which
could be hundreds of pounds.
How can you keep your vehicle in shape?
Its well worth getting your vehicle serviced
twice a year - once as part of its annual MOT check-up and
the other at a six-month interval. This will ensure that your
car is well maintained by an expert and any problems that
may not be easily recognisable to an amateur can be quickly
dealt with.
However, there are some simple steps you can
take to keep your car well maintained on your own - including:
- Air filter: Examine the filter for dirt and
tears in the paper and replace if necessary.
- Anti-freeze: Make sure you use the correct
concentration as anti-freeze raises the boiling point of the
water in your radiator so the water can keep the engine cool
even during summer heat.
- Battery checks: Watch out for corrosion after
the winter months.
- Brake inspection: Think about how reliant
you are on your brakes. Its worth having a professional examine
the pads and brake fluid twice a year to ensure everything
is in order - but you should test your brakes each time you
drive in a safe area before you reach a main road.
- Headlights: Check the bulbs regularly to ensure
they are working.
- Tyre checks: Check at least once a month and
ensure they are inflated to the correct pressure. Do this
with the tyre as 'cold' as possible.
It may even be worth giving your car insurance
provider a call and informing it of the steps you take to
keep your car well maintained - it may offer you a discount.
