C-Tyres Scoops TAFF
Environmental Award
The
environmentally-friendly credentials of retreaded tyres have been
given a major boost with the news that C-Tyres Ltd, one of the UK's
leading retread manufacturers, has scooped the Environment Award
at the prestigious TAFF (Tyre and Fast Fit) Awards, organised and
presented by the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA).
C-Tyres Managing Director
Gary Oliver was presented with the award by Renault Vans National
Fleet Sales Manager (LCV), Mark Lovett on 26th April at the NTDA's
Annual Dinner held at the Birmingham Metropole Hotel.
The TAFF Awards are
considered to be the ultimate accolade for any company supplying
the UK tyre industry as the nominees are selected and voted for
by the membership of the NTDA, who make up the vast majority of
the tyre distribution trade in the UK. The Environment Award is
presented to the company, which in the opinion of the membership,
has shown the greatest commitment to environmental issues during
the previous year.
In winning the award,
C-Tyres Ltd, which is based in Langley Moor, Co. Durham, was pitched
against a number of the UK's leading tyre recovery specialists.
It is the first time that C-Tyres have won the award since the company
started trading in 2002, manufacturing the Colway and Greenway brands
of retreaded tyres.
Gary Oliver commented;
"We are absolutely delighted to have won this award and would like
to thanks all members of the NTDA who voted for us. We are particularly
pleased, not only for us, but for retreaders across the UK, because
we believe this award reflects the tyre industry's recognition of
the fact that retreading is at the forefront of tyre recycling".
Avon Celebrates With
Good ol' Days
Avon
Tyres celebrated their tenth anniversary of being the main tyre
supplier to Swansea based Day's Rental recently. The Melksham based
tyre company first started working with Day's Rental in 1996. Since
then, the relationship has continued to bloom.
Over the years, Avon
has supplied literally thousands of tyres across the entire fleet
of more than 2,000 vehicles. To mark the occasion, Avon Tyres national
account manager Simon Michael presented Day's Rental maintenance
manager Andy Williams with a glass plaque.
Days Rental is part
of the Days Motor Group, with 12 premises spread across South and
West Wales.
Aston Martin Chooses
Bridgestone
Aston
Martin has teamed up with Bridgestone, choosing Potenza RE050A tyres
for its stunning new V8 Vantage, having previously fitted the ultra-high-performance
tyres on the hugely popular DB9. The stunning car is the most affordable
Aston Martin launched to date, and fuses the marque's traditional
style with everyday usability. And like all Aston Martins, it offers
electrifying performance and outstanding agility.
Powered by a 4.3 litre
engine, the V8 Vantage can accelerate from 0-60mph in under five
seconds and boasts a top speed of 175mph. The car's impressive performance
is not only down to the powerful engine, but also its unique lightweight,
aluminium structure, which gives it excellent strength and stability.
The Potenza RE050A
is Bridgestone's flagship high-performance tyre, and is the perfect
choice for cars that combine style and comfort with blistering pace
and responsive handling capabilities.
"It is very encouraging
that Aston Martin has chosen our Potenza tyres for this stunning
new sports car," said Andy Lane, marketing manager at Bridgestone
UK. "Like the DB9 before it, the V8 Vantage is a powerful and stylish
car that requires its tyres to provide optimal grip and comfort
levels, so the Potenza RE050A is the perfect choice."
With an outer pattern
featuring large blocks, the tyre provides superior handling and
road holding, while its larger contact area dramatically improves
cornering performance. As well as offering exceptional cornering,
the Potenza RE050A's pattern provides rapid water evacuation. Even
at high speeds the tyre's contact patch remains clear, so there
is less chance of hydroplaning and more grip on the road.
The Potenza RE050A
is available in two sizes for the Aston Martin V8 Vantage; 235/45
(front) and 275/40 (rear) for 18 inch lightweight aluminium wheels,
and 235/40 (front) and 275/35 (rear) for 19 inch wheels.

Don't Neglect Your Tyres
Warns Michelin
Michelin's
"Fill up with Air" tyre pressure check and education campaign examined
more than 400 vehicles in Manchester during April and the results
were shocking. 83% of the 1600 tyres checked were under inflated,
66% were inflated to a dangerous level (at least 7psi below the
recommended pressure) and most worrying of all, 6% of cars checked
had a puncture but were still driving on public roads.
"This is an shocking
level of neglect by Manchester's drivers even when compared with
our experience right across Europe where we regularly find 60% of
tyres under inflated," says Steve Dolby, Product Marketing Manager
for Michelin UK. "Our test team, who carry out these checks throughout
the EC, were surprised at the poor standard of tyre maintenance
exhibited by drivers in the North West. Finding 6% of cars actually
driving around with punctures is of great concern. It serves to
highlight our constant message that we need a national awareness
campaign supported by all the motoring organisations and the Government
to educate drivers to carry out a simple tyre pressure check at
least once a month. We also found one car with one wheel nut missing
- not just on one wheel, which is dangerous enough but on all four!
The sample of cars we inspected in Manchester can only be classed
as appalling."
Postman Wins Michelin Energy
Fuel Challenge at Silverstone
Fuel consumption is
probably the last thing on the mind of most drivers racing round
the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit! However at the recent GreenFleet
Arrive 'N' Drive event, held at the home of the British Grand Prix,
Michelin challenged delegates at the vehicle fleet management seminar
and test drive day to achieve the best fuel consumption figure on
a lap of the 3.2 mile GP circuit in a Renault Clio Dynamique 1.5dCi
fitted with fuel-saving Michelin Energy E3A tyres.
The winner of the competition
was Martin Reid, Fleet Environmental and Technical Manager at the
Royal Mail. Martin proved the worth of the Michelin Energy tyres
by achieving a superb 69.0 miles per gallon figure over a lap of
the cold, wet and windy circuit. Martin wins a set of Michelin Energy
tyres for achieving the best fuel consumption figure during the
day.
Intensive testing ahead of
BRC for Hankook SJR Team
With
the first round of the British Rally Championship getting underway
shortly the Hankook SJR team is making its final preparations for
its first assault on Britain's premier rally series. Former British
Rally Champion Gwyndaf Evans and young hotshot Stuart Jones will
spearhead the team's campaign in the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British
Rally Championship which beings in Carlisle on Saturday May 13.
The team line-up was
announced on the world stage at Autosport International in January
giving the Hankook SJR Team time to build and test the Mitsubishi
Evo 9 cars the drivers will use on this year's championship.
"It seems a long time
since we announced the drivers but it has given everyone behind
the scenes the time needed to plan a serious BRC campaign,'' said
Hankook Motorsport manager Mike Patterson. "The team has been testing
extensively in Wales ahead of the Carlisle-based Pirelli Rally which
takes in some of the toughest gravel stages in the country. The
weather will play a huge role in tyre selection for the rally but
we have been testing in wet and dry conditions to fine tune the
best tyres for all eventualities.''
In addition to testing
the cars and tyres both Gwyndaf and Stuart have been busy preparing
themselves mentally and physically for the task ahead and are keen
to get the championship underway. Stuart has already been competing
on the gravel and asphalt with a win on the Winter Stages in Telford
earlier this year and an impressive class result on the Rallye Catalunya
- a round of the World Rally championship.
Meanwhile Gwyndaf has
been integral in the development of the cars being used this season
and in helping Stuart step up to a full assault on the British Rally
Championship.
Loeb and Elena Kings
of the Pampas!
Sébastien
Loeb and Daniel Elena (Citroën/BFGoodrich) have secured their second
consecutive Rally Argentina win and also their 24th victory at WRC
level, a score which takes Elena level with the record held by Luis
Moya, until now the championship's most successful co-driver. Marcus
Grönholm (Ford/BFGoodrich) fleetingly figured at the top of the
leaderboard in South America before falling foul of mechanical trouble
at the end of Leg 1, leaving Petter Solberg (Subaru) and Gigi Galli
(Peugeot) to join Loeb on the podium.
